Chinese researchers compared various studies and concluded that green tea lowers cholesterol.
Xin-Xin Zheng and colleagues from Peking Union Medical College studied the results of 14 studies on the effect of green tea.
They divided the participants of the studies in a group that green tea (or green tea supplements) had consumed for a period of at least three months and a group that placebos or nothing had consumed.
Cholesterol Lowering
The results showed that green tea lowers cholesterol levels by an average of 7.2 mg / dL reduced compared with the control group. The bad cholesterol , LDL decreased by an average of 2.2 mg / dL. There was, however, seen in the good HDL cholesterol. No change Green tea contains catechin, a polyphenol with properties of an antioxidant . The researchers think that this catechin reduces the absorption of cholesterol in the body and thus lowers the cholesterol level. Previous studies have already shown that catechins have a beneficial effect on the heart . They work as a natural blood thinner or anticoagulant and also reduce the inflammation in the blood vessels.
Medication
Although the effect of green tea on cholesterol has been shown, there is only a small reduction.
The researchers emphasize the importance of cholesterol-lowering medication and see green tea not as a replacement. However, green tea complement healthy diet.
