This condition is characterized by a significant loss of weight caused by the patient and by a misperception of one's body. Accordingly, endocrine problems are evident in a relatively short space of time. The main anorexia symptoms determining the onset of the disease are:
- Refusal to maintain body weight above the minimum appropriate for the age and size of the patient.
- Fear of weight gain or obesity even if the weight is lower than recommended.
- Distorted perception of body weight and proportions.
- Absence of three consecutive menstrual cycles in women ( amenorrhea ). Anorexics may experience a range of very different symptoms: constipation , amenorrhea , abdominal pain, vomiting, etc..

Regarding the clinical consequences, the anorexia symptoms are:
- The pulse rate is reduced.
- They produce arrhythmia that can lead to cardiac arrest.
- Lower blood pressure .
- Disappears in women menstruation ( amenorrhea ).
- Bone mass decreases, and in the very early cases, slows the growth rate.
- Decreased intestinal motility.
- Anemia.
- Appears fine hair and long, called woolly, back, forearms, thighs, neck and cheeks.
- Constipation chronic.
- The decreased energy expenditure produces a constant feeling of cold.
- The skin becomes dehydrated, dried and cracked.
- Yellowing of the palms of hands and soles of the feet by the accumulation of carotene in the sebaceous glands.
- Nails break.
- Hair loss.
- Teeth problems and peripheral edema. Bloating and abdominal pain.
