There is no miracle drug and no miracle cure for alcoholism. Because of the various factors involved in this disease, treatment is usually based on a combination of techniques that include:
Psychological treatment
It is to examine and discuss the problem drinkers, whether through individual counseling or group therapy. Behavior therapy is also used as a method to improve the behavior of people drinking and randomly out of the addiction.
Social Treatment
The goal is to help a drinker readjust to society and resume a useful role in it. He is helped in his return to the family, work and other social problems that may be associated with alcoholism. Individuals are encouraged to join the self-help groups for social therapy.
Pharmacotherapy
This is sometimes used in addition to the other two treatments, especially in the first stage detoxification when anticonvulsants tranquilizers, vitamins and possibly can be administered to an alcoholic.
The drugs used and prescribed for the treatment of alcoholism, are those which, when combined with alcohol treatment options unpleasant effects such as headache, vomiting, nausea and breathing difficulties, and act as a deterrent to drinking.
The two main drugs available for the treatment of alcoholism Antabuse (disulfiram) and Abstem. These drugs are available only by prescription, and have largely taken the place of the previously used emetics in the treatment of alcohol aversion.
The goal of any treatment is to restore a drinker and his family in a healthy, sustainable and satisfying life. Most medical experts believe that this can be done only by total abstinence, as an alcoholic is never cured completely only resisting the temptation to drink.
But there is a minority that believes that alcoholics can learn through behavioral therapy to become controlled drinkers. The perspective of most alcoholics are much more optimistic than most people, including many doctors.
Drinkers who sincerely wish to end their addiction or dependence on alcohol can do, as long as qualified seek and accept help. All specialized organizations provide a listening ear and understanding to all who approach them and provide care and treatment to the victim when necessary.
Alcoholism is no longer considered as a crime or a disgrace. It is a disease that can often be cured and checked in most cases. Therefore, since there is no reason or excuse for people with alcohol problems to suffer the shame and silence.
